One of the things I’ve noticed about outer space is that any time our fiction takes us there, it’s usually completely filled with things that are trying to kill us. Fight back against the aliens in SCAWAR Space Combat!
Developer’s Description:
SCAWAR Space Combat is a heavy piece of ground shaking alien blasting action. High octane music, rich graphics and particle effects and intuitive tilt controls take SCAWAR Space Combat way above the rest!
| Category | Score | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Does it Fulfill its Purpose? | 19 | At its core, SCAWAR is a simple game- you move by tilting the device, and shoot with the touchscreen. However, SCAWAR includes a lot of features that really add the gameplay. High scores, upgrades, and collectible crystals add length to the game, and working towards the leaderboards made replaying levels fun. I also appreciated that they included a number of settings, including the ability to tone down the graphics- users with lower-end phones will find that very useful. I did feel that a few of the earlier upgrades seemed to only make a slight difference, and there were quite a few advertisements, though they never got in the way of the actual game. |
| Does it Look Good? | 19 | Everything looks very good in SCAWAR Space Combat. The enemies looked nice and are animated well, and the music was good and didn’t get annoying during my review time. |
| Does it Run Well? | 18 | SCAWAR runs around 2.25MB when installed to SD. It includes permissions for internet, phone state, vibrate, in-app purchases, and to prevent the phone from sleeping. The only bug that I encountered was that often bullets would go through enemies- it seems that the radius at which it detects a hit is quite small- though this seemed to get better with upgrades. |
| Is it Easy to Use? | 16 | When I first started SCAWAR, a tutorial walked me through the controls. You tilt the device to move your ship, and wherever you tap a joystick appears for your firing direction. It took a bit of practice to get used to the controls, and you always had one finger covering up part of the screen, but it wasn’t too difficult to figure out. Still, more control options might make playing the game simpler for some players- especially in the later levels, where precision is so important. |
| Is it Fun? | 18 | SCAWAR Space Combat is quite fun- not only is the gameplay enjoyable, the multiple levels, upgrades, and leaderboards made this a game that I thoroughly enjoyed playing. The earlier levels were simple enough to allow me to figure out the controls, while the later levels were frantic enough for it to be a significant challenge. |
| Overall Score | 90 | If you like space combat games, definitely check out SCAWAR- it’s a fun, free game with over 2 dozen levels and multiple enemies and bosses. |
